Who is it for?

FCE is aimed at people who have completed level B2 of the Common European Framework (completed Upper-intermediate level / ESOL Level 1).

Who developed it?

First Certificate in English (FCE) has been developed by Cambridge University ESOL Examinations. Cambridge ESOL is a part of the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), which has provided examinations in English for speakers of other languages since 1913.

British or American?

When you take any of the Cambridge ESOL exams you will be dealing predominantly with the British variety of English.
In your answers you can use any widely acceptable variety of English, providing you do it consistently. In other words, you can’t – for example – use a British English spelling of a word in one task and an American English spelling in another.

A certificate from Cambridge ESOL is recognised as proof of your language abilities by more than 8,500 employers, universities and government bodies around the world. Please go to Cambridge ESOL page for the full list.

What is tested?

The scoring system:

The final grade will reflect how well you did on all of the papers. Each paper contributes 20% to the final score.

The possible grades:

  • Grade A – 80-100%
  • Grade B – 75-79%
  • Grade C – 60-74%
  • Grade D – 55-59%
  • Grade E – 54% or less

The candidates who received grades D and E (i.e. candidates who failed) will not receive a certificate.

For how long will my FCE be valid?

An FCE certificate is valid for life. You will not need to take the exam again.

How often is FCE given?

You will find the exam dates here.
