Who is it for?
IELTS is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.
Who developed it?
IELTS is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS covers the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
British or American?
For academic purposes IELTS is widely used in the UK and Australia and also recognised by most American and Canadian universities, including Harvard Business School.
IELTS is also recognised by more than 6000 institutions across 120 countries.
What is tested?
As with every exam, it is very important that you know why you have decided to take IELTS. Is it for work or study? Do you already know what you would like to study and at which university?
There are two reasons for which this is important:
1. There are two modules that you can take and you need to know which module is required by the academic body you want to apply to, before you start preparing for the exam.
a. General Training
b. Academic
2. As a level-testing exam, IELTS provides you with a score – an assessment of your language abilities. You need to know before you start preparing for the exam how high a score you need to get to be admitted / to get the job.
The scoring system:
The test is graded from level 1 (Non-user) to level 9 (Expert user).
What is the passing score?
This test was not designed to measure achievement (i.e. whether you ‘passed’ or ‘failed’) but to assess your level (tell you how well you know English).
However, most employers registered as recognizing IELTS qualification accept 6.5 as a minimum pass grade.
For how long will my IELTS score be valid?
Your IELTS results will be valid for 2 years. After that you will need to take the test again.
How often is IELTS given?
The IELTS test is administered approximately twice a month. To view IELTS information for your country, visit this website.
