Who is it for?

TOEFL has been specifically designed for people wishing to test their English for academic purposes.

Who developed it?

The test was prepared by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey.

British or American?

TOEFL is used mainly by American universities, though also accepted in the UK and Australia. Altogether TOEFL is accepted in 6,000 universities in 110 countries worldwide.
However, 4,300 out of the 6,000 degree-awarding colleges and universities accepting TOEFL are in the USA.

What is tested?

TOEFL comes in two varieties: a paper-based test and an Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT). Since 95% of TOEFL nowadays is Internet-based, we will only concentrate on this variety.

TOEFL iBT tests all of the four skills:

  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Speaking*
  • Writing

*In the Speaking section, test takers wear headphones and speak their responses into a microphone. The responses are digitally recorded and sent to ETS’s Online Scoring Network (OSN).

The scoring system:

Each component is graded separately:

What is the passing score?

There is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ rate. Each institution decides what TOEFL result candidates must achieve in order to be admitted.

For how long will my TOEFL score be valid?

Your TOEFL score is valid for only two years. After that you will have to take the test again.

How often is TOEFL test given?

The TOEFL test is administered once a month, either on Friday or Saturday. Please go to the TOEFL website for details.
