Who is it for
TOEIC is a multiple choice test developed for people who use English in nonacademic situations, such as international business, trade, industry and diplomacy.
British or American?
The variety of English used in TOEIC test is American English, although because its aim is to measure language proficiency in an international environment, every effort is made to ensure that the test is unbiased and culturally relevant to candidates worldwide.
The TOEIC test development team is careful to:
- Avoid language that is specific to US or British English (e.g. vocabulary, grammatical constructions, idioms)
- Choose contexts that are not specific to one culture, or that may be foreign to candidates from some cultures
- Ensure the balanced use of names from different nationalities
- Refer to locations, people, or events that would be recognized in many different countries
- Avoid situations that are too specific to one occupational area
Who developed it?
The test was prepared by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey.
What is tested?
TOEIC consists of a Listening Comprehension section in four parts and a Reading section in three parts.
There is no Writing or Speaking module in the TOEIC test.
The scoring system:
The TOEIC gives a score between 10 and 990:
- 905 - 990 International Proficiency
- 785 – 900 Working Proficiency Plus
- 605 – 780 Limited Working Proficiency
- 405 – 600 Elementary Proficiency Plus
- 255 – 400 Elementary Proficiency
- 185 – 250 Memorised Proficiency
- 10 – 180 No Useful Proficiency
What is the passing score?
This test was not designed to measure achievement (i.e. whether you ‘passed’ or ‘failed’) but to assess your level (tell you how well you know English).
However, companies may use the TOEIC test to set their own standards and may require that employees have a certain minimum TOEIC score because the corresponding level of English is needed on the job. This does not mean that an individual will pass, or fail, the TOEIC test—it simply means that he or she will meet, or not meet, the standards set by a specific company.
For how long will my TOEFL score be valid?
Your TOEFL score is valid for only two years. After that you will have to take the test again.
For how long will my TOEIC score be valid?
The candidates’ scores will be kept on file and reported for 2 years.
The TOEIC programme recommends that candidates retake the test if more than 2 years have passed since the test was last taken.
